2024 Open Water Safety Lessons

The Village of Elk Rapids is offering Water Safety Lessons. Classes will run for two weeks with three lessons per week. Sign-ups will start Monday, June 3rd, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. and end Wednesday, June 19, 2024  at 3:00 p.m. You can sign up online at elkrapids.org or go to the Elk Rapids Government Center to fill out a paper form. There will be a $50 charge per session, and students can only sign up for one session per summer. The Village of Elk Rapids ordains that two (2) new ordinances, as text amendment to the Village of Elk Rapids Code of Ordinances, were duly adopted at the regular council meeting held on December 5, 2023, as follows:

1. Ordinance 2023-09: Libraries in Industrial District – Amendment to §44-38 (Zoning District Intent) & §44-75 (District Tables of Permitted Use) of the Code of Ordinances.

2. Ordinance 2023-12: Violations and Penalties for Unregistered Short-Term Rentals – Amendment to §8-66 (Violations and Penalties) of the Code of Ordinances.

Effective Date: December 22, 2023.

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will be holding its bi-annual informational meeting at the November 7, 2023 regular council meeting, which will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Government Center, 315 Bridge Street, Elk Rapids, MI 49629. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Informational meetings are meetings for the purpose of informing the public of the goals and direction of the authority, including projects to be undertaken in the coming year. They are not for the purpose of voting on policy, budgets or other operational matters.

VILLAGE SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR BEAUTIFICATION, HARBOR, HOUSING, AND ZBA COMMISSIONS

The Elk Rapids Village Government is excited to invite all community members with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and ideas to apply for an array of volunteer positions to aid in the decision-making process of our local government. Elk Rapids is fortunate to have an abundance of highly educated, community-focused people. Serving on a village commission is a fulfilling experience and a great way to give back to our community. The Village Government is seeking volunteers, both new and seasoned, with fresh ideas for the following board/commission positions:

• Beautification Commission (2 positions open)

• Harbor Commission (2 positions open)

• Housing Commission (1 position open)

• Zoning Board of Appeals (1 position open)

The Elk Rapids Housing Commission (ERHC) will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, November 9, 2023 for the purpose of reviewing the PHA 2023 Five Year Plan. The hearing will be held at the Elk Rapids Government Center located at 315 Bridge Street, Elk Rapids, Michigan. A copy of the proposed plan will be available for review and comment in the ERHC office located at 701 Chippewa Street, Elk Rapids, Michigan, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
