Village Services

Want to know where to take your trash and recycling? Looking to get a building permit for that home addition you’re finally getting to do? Attempting to contact the Elk Rapids Harbor to reserve the Blesma Pavilion for your child’s wedding? If so, you need a copy of the Elk Rapids Guide to Village Services.

In addition to the electronic version of the Guide found at the link below, the Village has available hard copies of the guide. So, the next time you’re at the Government Center, grab one. They’re very handy.

  • The Village of Elk Rapids offers monthly street-side brush pick up to all Village residents. The Department of Public Works (DPW) picks up brush on the first Monday of each month.

Residents may place brush at the street-side beginning on the Friday immediately preceding the first Monday of the month.

The Village does not accept brush at the DPW Garage lot (117 Lake Street) or at the Waste Water Treatment Plant facility (8228 Herman Rd.). Dropping brush either of these locations is considered littering, and is treated as such.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS SERVICE:

Brush pick up will begin on the East Side of town and move west. No return pickup will be made.

The Village truck will not drive on non-village streets, i.e., condos, trailer parks, etc.

Brush that is taken down by contractors (i.e. tree trimming services) will not be accepted and should be disposed of by the contractor.

Residents must have their brush piled neatly by the shoulder of the street, butt ends facing out, with roots and dirtballs removed.

    No alley pickups.

This is a service for downed branches or a tree that is being removed from developed lots or homes in the Village, not to clear empty lots.

This monthly service is for brush pick-up only. No trash, garbage or construction materials will be accepted. Brush should not be mixed with leaves, grass clipping or yard rakings.

Residents with questions regarding this new service should contact Department of Public Works.

  • REFUSE

Garbage disposal for Village residents is available at the Village Compactor on Herman Road every Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A Village permit sticker – mailed in July with summer tax bills – is required. Non-residents may use the compactor services with the purchase of blue plastic bags at the Village Market (Elk Rapids Location).

    Compactor rules are as follows:

Compactor stickers allow for the disposal of refuse generated by the occupant of the address on the tax bill to a maximum of six (6) bags, each day the compactor facility is operating.

Lost stickers can be reissued to the property owner upon receipt of a $75 fee, provided those property owners are willing to sign a written affidavit attesting to the fact that their sticker was lost.

Compactor stickers should be affixed to the driver’s side of the vehicle windshield.

If landlords do not issue the sticker to the tenant of their property, the renter shall purchase compactor bags or make other arrangements for their refuse disposal.

Guidelines for acceptable materials are posted at the compactor.

Operators will refuse service if rules are not followed.

The compactor premises are under video surveillance for the safety of citizens and Village staff.

  • Recycling services are available to all citizens – regardless of Village residency – in the gravel lot to the south of the Elk Rapids Government Center (315 Bridge St., Elk Rapids, MI 49629). The Recycle Center is a self-service facility operated by Antrim County.

    Recycling rules are as follows:

    Open to all residents

    Acceptable materials include:

    Steel and aluminum cans

    All glass food containers

#1 PET plastic bottles and containers

#2 HDPE plastic bottles and containers

#5 PP plastic bottles and containers

Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, corrugated cardboard and boxboard

*ALL ITEMS MUST BE PLACED INSIDE THE RECYCLING BINS*

Residents with questions regarding these services should contact Department of Public Works Superintendent.
