Here is the report that Village Manager Bryan Gruesbeck presented to council on the September 19, 2022 regular meeting:

  • 13 Ways Team Visit: Last week (September 12 – 15) the 13 Ways Team followed up their community assessment with another visit to Elk Rapids where they met various groups to develop a regional strategic vision. The conversation with Staff was helpful and reinforced the need for positive and professional communication at all levels of our operations and organization.
  • Striping Roads and Parking Lot: Staff is currently seeking a price to paint parking lines on the resurfaced Government Center parking lot. We are also seeking a price from the same company to repaint lines as directed by Village Council. Price quotes are expected to arrive by Friday, September 16, 2022.
  • Cedar Street Project Update: Construction crews are also digging up the segment of Cedar Street between Traverse Street and River Street. This project will replace an old sanitary sewer segment, add a stormwater control device, and replace cobbled pavement with new asphalt. This project is expected to be completed in December. The new underground stormwater control device in Cedar Street will collect rainwater and remove many harmful sediments before it reaches Grand Traverse Bay. The stormwater project is funded by The Water Shed Center and continues the partnership that began with the River Street rain gardens. The Village and The Water Shed Center will also be installing new neighborhood rain gardens in various locations of the Village later this month.
  • Community Garden: Staff will be working directly with community gardeners on the future location of the community garden. The garden has been located on Bridge Street adjacent to the recycling center. However, the proposed workforce housing project will require the community garden to continue in a different location. The new location will likely be situated on the north side of Rotary Park.
