The Village of Elk Rapids has been designated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) as a Pure Michigan Trail Town.

The Trail Town designation recognizes and provides resources for communities that provide trails and outdoor recreation opportunities to residents and visitors. To date, only eight communities have been recognized as Pure Michigan Trail Towns.
