The Village of Elk Rapids proclaimed that it was a Monarch City and that the local government will commit to helping this indigenous creature with different initiatives. During the opening ceremonies of Harbor days, there will be an time to raise awareness of and celebrate monarchs in the village. President Jim Janisse will make a welcoming statement and Cyndie Roach of the Grand Traverse Butterfly House and Grand Traverse Butterfly Charities will speak to conservation efforts. Participants will then be invited to release tagged butterflies by opening a given envelope.
The opening ceremonies will be held in Downtown Elk Rapids near Yuchaz Walkway and Bayfront Bikes at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. There will be seververal community partners in attendance, including those from the Elk Rapids Area School District, Green Elk Rapids, the Garden Club, Beautification Commission, village trustees & staff, and more!
